Phil Sandusky’s 2023 Plein Air Workshop at St. Joseph Abbey

Info for Phil Sandusky’s Plein Air Landscape / Architectural Painting / Drawing Workshop at Saint Joseph Abbey Feb 28 – March 02 2023    75376 River Road, Covington, LA 70435
Students may pursue plein air landscape and/or architectural painting and/or drawing (I’ve decided to add the drawing component to attract a bigger audience and to emphasize in the workshop title that there are both compelling pure landscape subjects as well as magnificent architecture). Students are encouraged to stay overnight in the Saint Joseph Abbey’s Retreat Center for the duration of the workshop with 3 meals/day provided. Photos of the retreat center accommodations are shown below. Students may also attend the workshop without staying overnight but must pay the visitor’s center for the meals, regardless of whether or not they stay overnight. We must have at least 10 students staying overnight to make the workshop plausible.

Tuition for each student is $300

Total cost per student:

Overnight student:

Should arrive/check-in between 4 and 6pm Feb 27 and dinner that night will be the first meal

Visitor’s Center: $434 – this includes 3 nights in a room and 9 meals

Tuition:               $300

Total:                 $734

Overnight student must be checked out by 9am on Thursday, March 2 but both breakfast and lunch will be served on that day.

Day student:

Retreat center: $270 – this is for 9 meals

Tuition:               $300

Total:                 $570

Retreat center fee must be paid by the student through the retreat center by contacting Jill Richard at 985-892-3473

Tuition must be paid to Phil Sandusky

A full refund will be issued for tuition and the visitor’s center fees for cancelations 2 weeks before the workshop (on or before Feb 1 2022).

The workshop enrolment will be open until late January or until it has 14 students and will be cancelled Feb 1 if there is inadequate enrolment.

Phil Sandusky’s St. Joseph’s Abbey Plein Air Landscape Painting / Drawing Workshop Description

Students can focus on drawing and/or painting. There are great benefits that each provide. I’m happy to discuss this when you contact me.

For drawing and painting, I emphasize a succinct approach, showing students the importance of a strong, simplified statement of the whole. I help students to see shapes, patterns, and color relationships and coach them to improve their work by making the simplified statement stronger rather than being lured into the usual pitfall of trying to improve their work through adding more detail and polish.

The workshop is three days long. Each day there’s a three-hour session in the morning, a break for lunch, and a three-hour session in the afternoon. Of course students can work earlier, later, and in between if they like. Staying overnight in the visitor center gives much latitude. In the morning of the first day, painting students will apply an imprimatura to their canvases, after which I’ll demonstrate both drawing and painting for the whole group. After the demonstration, painting students will work on different canvases in the morning and afternoon to accommodate the changing light. They should have other fresh canvases available in case, during any given session, a mostly sunny sky becomes mostly cloudy or vice versa. Drawing students will focus more on form and not be encumbered as much by changing light, though I suggest a goal of producing more simplified drawings rather than fewer that are highly detailed.

My teaching employs a great deal of demonstration as well as criticism throughout the workshop, which I do for individual students or groups of students as needed. For painting, I prefer to demonstrate on canvas boards more often than working on students’ canvases when possible so that students can compare where they are to the direction I would suggest.

In February the chance of rain is lower than average but in case of rain, given that I only work from life, there are covered areas on the Abbey grounds protected from the rain from which there are good views to paint from the landscape. If the weather is too severe, students may work from photo references as a last resort.

In the evenings after dinner I’ll give PowerPoint presentations on various art topics that are optional for students to attend and we’ll have open discussions.

Here are images of some of the subject matter on the Abbey grounds, the visitor center accommodations, and the art studio in case of rain. I’ve also included a few of my paintings.

High Cotton Plein Air – October 2022

I was one of the invited artists for High Cotton Plein Air in Thomasville GA. There were very beautiful painting locations in both Thomasville and the nearby small agricultural town of Boston. Here are the plein air paintings I produced, including my first ever rendition of a cotton field:-) :

Phil Sandusky Plein Air Workshop at Saint Joseph Abbey Feb 15 – 17, 2022

Info for Phil Sandusky’s Plein Air Painting / Drawing Workshop at Saint Joseph Abbey, Feb 15-17 2022

Students may pursue plein air landscape and/or architectural painting and/or drawing. I encourage students to stay overnight in the Saint Joseph Abbey’s Retreat Center for the duration of the workshop with 3 meals/day provided. I will also be staying overnight. In the evenings after dinner, we’ll have optional slide presentations and open discussions about art. Students may attend the workshop without staying overnight but must pay the retreat center for the meals, regardless. The accommodations and meals at the retreat center are really nice. Below I’ve included several photos of accommodations and rooms at the retreat center and photos of some of the rich selection of subject matter on the abbey grounds. I’ve also interspersed some of my paintings and drawings I did during one of my stays (including the one above). Note: my paintings were done in overcast weather and my photos of the grounds were taken on a sunny day. Who knows what skies we’ll have during the workshop. The total cost for each student will be a combination of the tuition of $300 plus a fee for the retreat center of $398 for students staying at the retreat center or $240 for students not staying at the retreat center.

Total cost per student staying at the retreat center: $698

Total cost per student not staying at the retreat center: $540

Students staying at the retreat center should arrive/check-in between 4 and 6pm Monday, Feb 14 and dinner that night will be the first meal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided the next two days. The last day of the workshop (Thursday, Feb 17), breakfast and lunch will be provided, the workshop will be finished at 4pm but the students must be checked out of their rooms by 9am.

Students not staying overnight at the retreat center will be provided all the same meals and may attend the after-dinner slide presentations and discussions.

COVID Safety: The Abbey complies with Louisiana state mandates for COVID safety. FYI I (Phil Sandusky) have been double vaccinated and boosted with Moderna.

For any questions about the workshop, recommended supply list, or to enroll, contact me (Phil Sandusky) by text or voice: (504) 427-1890 or e-mail: sandmany11@cox.net   You will pay me for the tuition when you enroll. Then you must contact Lynette Kendall at the retreat center: 985-892-3473 to pay the appropriate retreat center fee separately.

A full refund will be issued for tuition and retreat center fees for cancelations 2 weeks before the workshop (on or before Feb 1, 2022). The workshop enrollment will be open until late January or until 14 students have enrolled and the workshop will be cancelled Feb 1 if we don’t have at least 10 students staying at the retreat center. If the workshop is cancelled due to inadequate enrollment, students will be given a full refund.

After June 2020 Palmer Park exhibit Sandusky will move his tent show to City Park for the Summer

I’ve made so many paintings lately in the City Park vicinity that, starting in July, I’m moving my monthly tent exhibit of quick oil sketches and plein air class demos to City Park. I’ll have one more exhibit in Palmer Park, Saturday, June 26. Thereafter, for at least July and August, people can see many beautiful paintings I’ve done in City Park and in the neighborhoods adjacent to City Park. My exhibit will be part of the larger art market on the Great Lawn across from the Peristyle, the second Saturday of each month. Shown here is one of my original oil paintings that will be exhibited. It was done as  a class demo in the Bayou St. John neighborhood. Because these paintings are class demos and quick sketches, they are very affordable!

Sandusky Paintings of the New Orleans Warehouse District at the Degas Gallery

The Degas Gallery, 604 Julia Street (Suite 101), New Orleans, LA 70130

In the early days of the pandemic, from April to mid-July, I captured the New Orleans Warehouse District with 30 paintings done plein air (on location from the live subject). Before the pandemic, this part of town had been difficult for me to access, given the busyness of the area and limited parking. But the empty streets in this unique situation gave me free rein to choose the perfect views to portray the unique beauty of this historic part of town with a large body of work.

The exhibit will be up for 2 months – October 2 to November 30). There will be a soft opening Friday, Oct 2, from 12 to 5pm and a curfew compliant regular opening on Saturday, Oct 3, from 5 to 7pm. Because of the pandemic, everyone entering the gallery must wear a mask and we ask that on opening night you attend either the first or second hour (but not both). This is to limit crowd size in the gallery. Also due to COVID-19, there will be restricted gallery hours during the exhibit. The gallery will be open Tuesday and Thursday, 10am to noon, and Saturday, noon to 2pm. The gallery will also be open by appointment. For an appointment, contact Cybele Gontar at (504) 826-9744 or e-mail: thedegasgallery@gmail.com

Here are a few of my plein air paintings of the New Orleans Warehouse district that will be exhibited:
